High school golf season starts quickly
DELAWARE - The time between the official start of high school golf practice and the first match teams can play is separated by just seven days.
With such a short time to get ready for the regular season, coaches and players must turn everything in fast forward to get ready for the season.
"We are going straight from playing golf with friends to playing those you don't know," Elgin's Josh Edington said.
"The kids that have prepared properly are ready to go," River Valley coach Kevin Keller said.
Coaches and players each got an early look at where they stand Tuesday in the North Union Invitational at Glenross Golf Club.
"It would be easier if rules allowed more time to practice and be around your teammates," Harding senior Wes Blankenship said. "You try to play as much as you can that first week and be on the course with other people and not by yourself."
Harding coach Chase Huddle looks at golf both as individual and team game.
"Golf is an individual sport, but the team chemistry is always there," Huddle said. "It takes some time to figure out who might be your best players, but it still takes the top four individual scores."
"These early 18-hole tournaments give our kids a chance to get in some back-to-back tournaments," Keller said. "The final scores are important but not as much as our league matches that will be coming."
Eric Boltz of Pleasant spent his summer playing in the Heart of Ohio Junior Golf Association and getting out on his own like many other players. But he would appreciate a little more time getting ready for the high school season.
"An extra week of practice might help and you would get used to playing with your teammates," he said.
"There is some pressure in that one week of practice," Edington said. "You want to show the coach what you can do."
The North Union Invitational was divided into two divisions, based on the size of the school.
Marysville won the big school division with a final count of 311 and The Wellington School won the small school bracket with a score of 305.
