Microsoft's Windows 8 Will Support Ripped DVDs

Microsoft Windows 8 will support virtual hard disks and ISO files, a boon to all those who have ripped a DVD.

Microsoft made its latest communication on Windows 8, Tuesday, part of its ongoing efforts to open the development process of Windows 8. The leadup is a prelude to the conference Microsft building, dedicated to Windows 8, which runs September 13 to 16 in Anaheim, California (read: Windows 8: What we know so far ")

Windows 8 will be able to store both. ISO and. VHD, the creation of virtual optical drives and virtual disk drives to read both.

"The trend of the incredibly large and small form factor hard drives means we can store ever increasing amounts of data without worrying about running out of capacity," Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows division at Microsoft, wrote in a blog ". 8 Windows provides easy access to the contents of two major storage formats, the ISO files and VHD. While we generally think of these formats when they appear on the media, they are also very useful as files in a file system and this is where the native support in the Explorer comes in handy."

Although the ability to support and ISOs VHD files are conceptually similar, the two functions will generally be valued by two different groups of people.

ISOs are simply a disk image, as an entire DVD - menus, formatting and all - stored in a single file. ISO file, burned to a CD or DVD can be played on any DVD player or CD. To date, the ISOs has generally been the province of pirates, however, with groups of ISO file sharing of popular games.

DVD, meanwhile, are usually torn apart and stored in formats such as MP4.ISOs have a disadvantage as uncompressed files, they are quite large compared to the DVD ripped, stripped and formatted MP4 files with audio included. However, extracting a DVD and convert it to MP4 software may either require a paid or a knowledge of freeware and shareware - and patience, as the current DVD ripper can take some time, as well. (Audio CD can not be ripped as an ISO standard, however.
