Still going strong at 72
SALISBURY -- Among the 15,000 bikers pedaling in the Register's annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa were Three Hot Chicks and the Old Man, names lovingly bestowed upon Don Cathcart, his daughter and two of her friends.
Cathcart, a 72-year-old retired math professor at Salisbury University, and a longtime runner and bicyclist, good-naturedly laughed at being referred to as the "Old Man" as he talked about the 454-mile ride, sponsored by The Register, a Des Moines newspaper.
"My daughter lives in Indiana. She and two of her friends are all fitness buffs. They run marathons," Cathcart said of daughter Laurie Baumgartner and her buddies.
He has been a runner for 57 years, is a biker and started training for the ride in April.
"I put in 2,000 miles in training. The terrain isn't like the Eastern Shore's. It's hilly. How do you train for hills? I rode over a lot of overpasses, and at the (gym) I did a lot of interval work on the bike," said Cathcart, who rode a Trek SX 7.6 bike, constructed for stability and comfort.
The July 24-30 event began in Glenwood, Iowa, and there were overnight stops in Atlantic, Carroll, Boone, Altoona, Grinnell and Coralville, plus bike tire dipping in the Mississippi River, according to www.ragerai.com .
Cathcart drove to Indiana and the group took a recreational vehicle to Glenwood. The bike ride ended in Davenport, Iowa.
"It goes through a lot of small towns that you ride through or spend the night in. All kinds of money-raising events are going on for different kinds of projects," he said. "It does raise a lot of money for some of these little communities."
Along the path, there were booths and opportunities for bikers to buy items, thereby making a contribution. All the money stayed in the state.
Cathcart said he met a lot of "characters" along the way, adding that one man skateboarded across the state.
