Rainy Days Are Perfect Mall Days
As someone tasked with being at the mall day in and day out, I have frankly never understood why people flock there on gorgeous days. Hot and sunny to me means beach, not fluorescent lights and alternately blasting/barely-on air conditioning. Quite the opposite, I’d say the best mall weather has got to be that boredom staple: the rainy day.
The mall is a perfect place to escape the rain. As long as you don’t get caught in a monsoon on your way in from the parking lot, the interior spells refuge. Everything is nice and dry (except the floor near entrances), and blissfully free of the stifling humidity that paradoxically precludes wearing a rain jacket. Furthermore, if I can wax poetic, the patter of rain on the glass ceiling is a comfortingly gloomy presence, making the mall feel almost cozy, like everyone inside is at a big slumber party or something.
Of course, you will not be the only one to have this idea. The mall on rainy days is often packed to the gills. But you will reap some benefits. Firstly, you’re bound to get better service; stores will be excited at the increased business, and employees generally aren’t as bitter when there isn’t nice weather to be missed outside. Another bonus? If power goes out, as it seems wont to do in my neighborhood, the mall is equipped with powerful generators to prolong your solace.
Besides all that, there’s just something about shopping in that sort of weather. Retailers probably love the psychological effect it has on consumers; gloomy and bored, we’re probably all susceptible to ill-advised purchases like glittery Toms or whatever it is they sell at Seacret. The fact is, while at other times better judgment may prevail, gray days are made for retail therapy.
And since your hiding-out will likely take a while, let us not forget the joy of comfort food, which is more or less the only kind the mall has. Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s, or the food court… all are great for the kind of glum day that makes you forget about healthy intentions and lets you bask in the pure joy of a slice of cake the size of your head.
