The Holy Spirit at work in the disciples

In John 14:16-17, Jesus says, “And I will pray the father, and he will give you another helper, that he may abide with you forever. The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him; but you know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.”

In these two verses we learn a great deal about the Holy Spirit in the life of a disciple. First, the Holy Spirit is in us to help us. Jesus knew we would need real help, and so he sent us a helper to help us through every situation.

Then we learn that the Holy Spirit would abide in us forever. The Holy Spirit is not here to help us temporarily and then leave. The Holy Spirit abides in us forever so that we would continually have the abiding presence of God inside of us. We are never alone, we are never abandoned, and we are never left to ourselves.

We learn that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of truth in us. This tells us that as we depend upon the Holy Spirit, we will always be truthful, always be honest and always hate a lie. Believers in Jesus who are filled with the Holy Spirit will love the truth and hate the lie. The Holy Spirit in us will never lead us to speak untruthfully.

What happens when we speak a lie even though the spirit of truth lives in us? Immediately, the spirit of truth will begin to speak to our mind and heart to repent and change direction. If we refuse to listen to the Holy Spirit speaking to us, we quench the Holy Spirit. As it says in I Thessalonians 5:19, “Do not quench the spirit.”

If we hear and know what the Holy Spirit is telling us but we refuse to obey, we grieve the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:29-30 says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

This passage reminds us of the primary way we grieve the Holy Spirit, by the words we speak out of our mouth. Our words are intended to bring grace to those who hear them. This means that we are to choose our words carefully so that they do not produce corruption to those that hear our words.
