Love-Letter to Auto-Tune, Part II
We’re singing the praises — in weird high-pitched computer voices, naturally — of Auto-Tune, the much-maligned and increasingly ubiquitous vocal-processing technology that’s become one of the defining sounds of 21st-century pop. Yesterday, we discussed the Auto-Tune pioneer Cher and the now-ex-Auto-Tune-superfan T-Pain, who brought the technology into diva-driven dance music and hip-hop, and Kanye West’s album “808s and Heartbreak,” on which a lovelorn millionaire used Auto-Tune to make people feel as sad for him as they did for Wall-E. Today, a few examples of how rappers, reggae singers, futuristic party-girls, D.J.’s and cartoon rodents have used and abused Auto-Tune in ways undreamt of by its creators. Plus: Ne-Yo gets cranky!
Lil Wayne, “Lollipop” (2008) While T-Pain may have done more with Auto-Tune commercially than any other artist, nobody’s gotten more creative mileage out of it than the New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne. Over the past few years, it’s enabled him to approximate Prince’s kinky wailing on the indescribable, T-Pain-assisted “Prostitute II,” to jump on a rock song like Fall Out Boy’s “Tiffany Blews,” to give his voice a quavering lover-man vibrato on his own “Single,” and to render countless slurry drug songs even druggier (the way psychedelic rockers of old used reverb and tape delay). Wayne is a rapacious artist who seems to live to gobble up other people’s aesthetic territory; you get the sense he would rap through a comb with wax paper on it if he thought it had the potential to sound cool. That’s called being a rock star. Wayne’s also used Auto-Tune to try his hand at actual rock songs — they’re way more pro forma than his rap records, and therefore less “rock” in the metaphorical sense. “Lollipop,” from 2008’s Tha Carter III, is probably Wayne’s biggest Auto-Tune-assisted hit. It’s not a rock song either, although this weirdly compelling cover by the Atlanta band Right Side of the Tree turns it into one, convincingly. Say what you will about Auto-Tune — there’s something magic about any technology that can create a postracial utopia in which a guy who sounds like a young Garth Brooks can sound perfectly natural singing a Lil Wayne song.
