Our cell phones remind us to do all sorts of things. We use them for our alarm clocks. We set alerts for meetings. We store grocery lists and birthday calendars.
Because 72% of cell phone owners send or receive text messages, companies see texting as a way for us to remember healthy habits.
And now, Florida parents can register for two more programs designed to keep their kids healthy.
Text4baby
Text4baby is a free service for pregnant women and new moms. A woman enters her due date and then receives timely texts about birth defect prevention, safe sleep, immunizations and more through the baby’s first birthday. Messages are available in English and Spanish. Text the word BABY (for Spanish-speakers, BEBE) to 511411.
Text4baby is a program of the National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition. It’s sponsored by various cell phone companies and corporate partners. As of last month, nearly 12,000 Florida women had enrolled in the program, according to the Florida Department of Health.
Vaxtext
Through Vaxtext , parents receive vaccination reminders through their child’s second birthday. Some sample messages:
“It’s time for baby’s 2-month visit. Your baby may receive a Rotavirus shot.” “If you are uninsured, your baby may get free vaccines thru Vaccines for Children at 1800-232-4636.”The health departments of Florida, Nevada, Arizona and Arkansas currently promote Vaxtext. Florida got on board because “DOH believed the texting of messages to parents educating them on infant vaccines would eventually increase and improve immunization coverage rates among the population,” says the Florida Department of Health.
