Campaign season nearly under way
City Council races throughout the county are inspiring a number of political hopefuls to put their hat in the ring - but two races are not yet finalized.
If an owner does not file - which is the case in the races for the Millbrae and San Carlos city councils - the deadline is extended until 5 pm, Wednesday, Aug. 17. Some cities - San Mateo and Foster City - holders who can not work because of term limits. In both cases, the service of others has closed the file that the filing period.While candidates have filed, the Office of the election is still verify the information to make sure each met the requirements to run.
Many City Council races are contested and set.
Six candidates have qualified as official candidates for three positions in the Council of Foster City. Mayor Linda Koelling and Councilman Rick Wykoff are both called out the board. Art Kiesel owner, Steve Okamoto, who works for the American Cancer Society, PTA-Chief Jennifer Minkey Selvitella, William Schwarz, business owners Herb Perez and Patrick Sullivan in the race.
All four owners of Redwood City for re-election - Barbara Pierce Ian Bain, Rosanne Foust and Alicia Aguirre - work again, but face competition from Paul McCarthy. Brett Garrett, who originally planned to run on a single issue anti-Cargill platform, came out of the race.
The race for Burlingame City Council was one of the first to have a challenger. Banker Ricardo Ortiz is difficult Vice Mayor Jerry Deal and Mayor Terry Nagel. Treat joined the Council in 2007 in a close race, while Nagel was looking for his third term.
At Belmont, owners David Braunstein and Christine Wozniak will face challengers Eric Reed, Paul McGuinness and Michael Brownlee for two to four years of council seats.
Also for re-election is the City Clerk Terri Cook was challenged by Vice Mayor Dave Warden. Warden is in the midst of a four-year term on the board.
